Rules &Regulations for Competitors

Please read this section very carefully. If you do not abide by these rules and regulations, you may be immediately disqualified or have a penalty of 1, 3, or 6 hours added to your race time.

Joshu Mt. Hotakasan Sky View Trail Committee

This event involves rigorous running for more than 120 kilometers mainly in mountainous areas, including areas with an altitude of 2,000 m or more in September. Competitors are entirely responsible for risks of injury, illness, or getting lost, which are caused by bad weather, including cold strong winds, rain, and snow, health problems, getting lost, tripping over, falling from hills, falling rocks, wild animals, bears, bees, and snakes. The event organizers have no responsibility whatsoever for these risks.

Eligibility for participation

  1. YNMC Division, about 129 km or more: Male and female competitors who are 19 or older on the day of the event and have completed two or more trail running events over a distance of 50 km or longer within the past three years by March 31, 2017
    Sky View 70 Division, about 75 km: Male and female competitors who are 19 or older on the day of the event and have competed two or more trail running events over a distance of 30 km or longer within the past three years by March 31, 2017
    SSky View 30 Division, about 30 km: Male and female competitors who are in junior high school or older on the day of the event

  2. People who are confident of completing the entire race without getting lost on the course before the cutoff time

Terms for participation

  1. Competitors must have skills to handle problems (altitude, weather, mental and physical problems) that may occur during the race event without being helped by others and have sufficient understanding of being responsible for themselves.
  2. Competitors must be well aware that the race is held in the natural environment involving many animals, plants, and people. They must have sufficient understanding of the event operation involving rules of the race and consideration toward users besides the participants to minimize damage to the environment.

Method of the race

  1. This race is a time-based race using designated courses.
    1. The type of race is the YNMC Division, involving about 129 kilometers with a total height difference of 9,200 meters. The capacity of the race is 800 participants in total, including male and female competitors.
    2. The type of race is the Sky View 70 Division, involving about 75 kilometers with a total height difference of 4,500 meters. The capacity of the race is 500 participants in total, including male and female competitors.
    3. The type of race is the Sky View 30 Division, involving about 32 kilometers with a total height difference of 1,800 meters. The capacity of the race is 500 participants in total, including male and female competitors.
  2. The entire race uses the YNMC course or parts of it (shortcuts are used in some areas). Multiple cutoff times are set for individual divisions. Competitors who cannot make the cutoff time must terminate their races and go down the mountain by following instructions of event staff.
    1. The YNMC Division starts at 5:00, Saturday, September 23, in the village of Kawaba Fureai Square.
    2. The Sky View 70 Division starts at 6:00, Saturday, September 23, in the town of Minakami Hodaigi Ski Slope.
    3. The Sky View 30 Division starts at 9:00, Saturday, September 23, in the village of Katashina Snow Pal Oguna Ski Slope.
  3. Competitors must pass multiple cutoff points before the cutoff times. The final cutoff time at the finish in the village of Kawaba is expected to be 35 hours.
  4. Participants must receive equipment inspection upon checking in. Competitors are not allowed to participate in the event unless they complete the equipment inspection.
    Equipment inspection and YNMC participation check in: Friday, September 22, Vin the village of Kawaba Gymnasium from 13:00 to 17:00 (The check-in is held on the day before because the race starts early in the morning.)
    Equipment inspection and Sky View 70 participation check in: Friday, September 22, Vin town of Minakami Hodaigi Ski Slope from 13:00 to 17:00

Rules concerning nature conservation

  1. The race course passes through a valuable natural environment, including areas where rare animals and plants live.
    The following rules are set to avoid negatively affecting the precious forest ecosystem.
    Make sure to thoroughly understand the concepts and follow the rules.
  2. Competitors must stay on the designated trails. No-passing zones or other restrictions will be set in areas where protection of the natural environment is necessary.
  3. Competitors must not remove or damage animals, plants, mushrooms, rocks, and other natural objects on the entire course or the entire area of the event.
  4. Cutting corners is prohibited because it damages vegetation in the area.
  5. Never leave garbage behind.
  6. Use the toilets provided at the individual aid stations. In case of an emergency, use the portable toilets and pack out all used toilet paper.
  7. Try to minimize CO2 emissions for participation in this event, such as by using public transportation or carpooling.
  8. Protection and proper use of the natural environment are encouraged around Mt. Hotakasan.
  9. Designation of walking zones, changing courses, or cancellation of the event may occur if the event organizers determine that trail conditions cannot withstand the use of many participants even when there is no safety risk on the day of the event.

Consideration of noncompeting hikers and other participants in the event

  1. In case a competitor finds another competitor who cannot move due to injury or illness during the race, the competitor is expected to prioritize assisting the competitor in trouble. When reporting the location to event organizers, tell them, "between post number 00 and 00," for example. (Posts are installed approximately every kilometer.)
  2. Please always be appreciative of people supporting the event, local people, and volunteers.
  3. Please understand that the courses are not reserved for the event, and noncompeting hikers are also using the courses. Do not block noncompeting hikers when passing on the courses and outside of the courses. When passing by noncompeting hikers, do so in safe areas and by walking rather than running. Be sure to say hello when passing by hikers.
  4. Be careful not to damage any structures on the courses.
  5. Never leave the designated course during the race.
  6. Be sure to run on the sidewalks along the paved roads besides the roads where exclusive use is permitted for the event.
    Follow the instructions of guide staff when crossing roads.
  7. Guide staff will guide the traffic of hikers and competitors on steep hills along the course leading from Kengamine (west) to the Utamino Waterfall. Supervising personnel stationed at the chained pass from the Tegoyasawa hut to Mt. Hotakasan. Noncompeting hikers have the right of the way. Please follow the instructions of the supervising staff.

Please understand the concepts and follow the rules below.

  1. The basic rule of passing other competitors is to do so when there is a two-lane course. When passing other competitors on a single-lane course, do so by signaling the competitor running ahead. Also, memorize the passing zones of the course before the start of the race.
  2. Supervising personnel patrol the applicable zones.
    Supervising personnel are authorized to terminate the race of a competitor who does not follow the rules of the competition on the spot.
  3. Walking zones may be provided in some sections of the course.

▓ Rules concerning noncompeting hikers ▓
There is no clear regulation on running on the trails in the mountains. Yet, these trails are built for walking, and running on them is not expected. Therefore, noncompeting hikers who are using the trail as intended have the right of the way when they are walking on the race course.

  1. Please give the way to noncompeting hikers if they are hiking on the race course.
  2. When passing noncompeting hikers, be sure to say something to make sure that they are aware of the approaching competitor and pass them by walking rather than running in the safe areas.
  3. When competitors are passing by noncompeting hikers, the hikers have the right of the way. Pass by noncompeting hikers by giving the way to them in the safe areas.

Aid stations and rescue system

Two aid stations with sleeping spaces and seven aid stations (A) will be installed.
(CP) means a checkpoint.

  1. Food and drinking water are provided at the aid stations. Water stations only provide drinking water.
  2. Toilets are provided at every aid station (A), rescue station at the site in the village of Kawaba, the Hotaka Farm Ski Slope (A3), and the site in the village of Katashina (A5), and first-aid kits in A1, A2, A4, A6, and A7. AED stations are also installed.
  3. Nonofficial support for competitors by family members and friends may be restricted at the aid stations for smooth operation.
  4. For providing nonofficial support, follow the instructions of staff and park vehicles in the designated spaces.
  5. Supporters are not allowed to receive services, such as receiving food and drinks, provided at the aid stations. Yet, they are allowed to rest if necessary by following the guides at the aid stations.
  6. People who are not registered for the race are not allowed to run with the competitors. They are not allowed to leave the designated areas of the aid stations, either.

Guides along the course

  1. Necessary amount of marking tapes, signposts, and staff are installed by receiving the permission of the landowners and administrators. Signs are installed on the guide courses, and ropes are provided for the dangerous areas in the mountains to avoid risks. Personnel are also stationed along the courses. Please follow their instructions.
  2. Distance signs are installed approximately every kilometer (Kp: kilo post).
  3. Follow instructions in no-passing zones and areas with signs indicating other restrictions.
  4. Competitors may be stopped at intersections and other areas. Follow the instructions of staff.
  5. Guides are installed immediately before the event and removed immediately after the event. (Please conduct a test run after installing logo tapes and checking them on the website.)

Rescue and medical aid systems

  1. For the safety of the race, the event committee is maintaining the race course in good condition and preparing rescue and medical aid systems. Competitors are expected to participate in the event with the full awareness that trail running is a sport conducted in nature and associated with risks, and they are responsible for injuries, illness, and accidents.
  2. Rescue stations for providing first aid are located at aid stations A3, A5, and the Kawaba finish zone. Doctors and nurses are standing by in these stations. These rescue stations are connected to the event headquarters via telephones or wireless phones.
  3. First aid is provided to rescue all people associated with this event including people registered or not registered with the event from dangerous situations.
    ※It may take time for rescue staff to arrive at scenes of trouble depending on the environment or other situations.
    ※Competitors who received treatment from doctors or rescuers must receive care from specialized doctors after the race and report the diagnosis to the event headquarters.
  4. Doctors and rescuers have the authority to terminate the race of competitors who cannot continue racing. IC chips and number cards may be removed from competitors in such cases.
  5. When the race is terminated, competitors can return from the scene of the problem to the finish zone using a pickup bus or support vehicle. Competitors are responsible for paying other expenses, such as using a taxi.
  6. Rescue teams may be called as needed based on the condition of the person in trouble. The person to be rescued is responsible for paying the expenses in such cases.
  7. Rescue services may be called directly, such as by dialing 119, if calling event headquarters failed.
  8. The insurance that the event organizer purchased for compensating accidents and illnesses of competitors cover the following.
    1. Death and injury that leaves a physical impairment (TBA) yen
    2. Hospitalization (daily) (TBA) yen
    3. Outpatient treatment (daily) (TBA) yen

Specification of the number of competitors who passed certain points and missing competitors

  • The number of competitors who started and completed the race, and those who passed individual aid stations is monitored using IC chips.
  • Names of competitors along with their records can be verified, and individual competitors can be identified.
  • Competitors must wear the IC chip and the number with the throughout the race. (They are not allowed to exchange items that they had at the check-in with others.)
  • IC chips will be collected after the finish. If an IC chip is lost, the competitor may be asked to pay 4,000 yen.
  • Return the IC chip to a staff nearby when a competitor is dropping out of the race. Or, the IC chip may be returned to a return box at one of the aid stations.

Dropping out of the race

Competitors who want to drop out of the race must notify a staff member and return the IC chip. Competitors are not allowed to return to the race after this process.
※Do not discard the number for it is required to retrieve baggage.

▓ Dropping out of the race at an aid station ▓

  1. Notify a staff member about dropping out of the race at an aid station.
  2. Competitors can return to the finish zone on a patrol bus or a pickup vehicle.

▓ Dropping out on the course ▓

  1. When dropping out of the race on the course, be sure to notify the staff or the event headquarters.
  2. Competitors who can move must move to the next or the previous aid station.
    Competitors who cannot move must follow the instructions of the staff.
    ※It is expected to take a long time to pick up competitors if they drop out of the race on the course.
    Please notify staff about dropping out at a prior aid station if you are not confident about your physical strength.

Equipment checklist

Required equipment (Items that competitors must be carrying)
・The required equipment inspected when receiving the number must not be changed later.

  1. Distributed numbers and IC chip for recording
    ※The number is given after the equipment inspection, and the IC chip for recording is attached to the number.
  2. Course map, compass (or devices with the function of compass, such as digital compass)
  3. Two lights (make sure that lights are in working condition) and backup batteries for both
  4. First aid kit (adhesive bandages, disinfectant, etc.) and poison remover
  5. Therapeutic tape (ones which can be used as bandage or strap. 80 cm x 3 cm or more)
  6. Rain jacket & Rain pants
    Hooded rain jacket made with breathable waterproof fabric (recommended: water pressure resistance of 10,000 mm/cm2 or more) of which the seams are waterproofed with seam tape to be worn in bad weather in the mountains
    Rain jackets missing either of the waterproof function or breathability are not allowed.
  7. Mobile phone (Save the telephone number of the event office and call without using the hidden number function. Keep mobile phones fully charged.)
  8. Gloves (Finger-less gloves are not allowed.)
  9. Survival blanket
  10. Cup or tumbler cup (150 cc or more) for personal use. Glass bottles are not allowed.
  11. Water (at the start)
  12. Portable food
  13. Portable toilet
  14. Bear bell
  15. Warm clothes
    Insulated clothes, such as down jacket and fleece (Cotton is not allowed.)
    Or combination of more than three layers, including base layer, middle layer, and outer layer (Cotton is not allowed.)
  16. Insurance card (Photocopy is allowed.)
  17. Photo ID card, such as driver's license (Colored photocopy is allowed.)
  18. Self-illuminating item that can be attached to backpacks and visible from behind while running at night (e.g. self-illuminating reflectors and flashlight). Reflectors without self-illuminating functions are not allowed.

▓ Other recommended items to carry ▓

  • Hat, clothes to change, sunscreen, petroleum jelly, cash, mobile phone charge cable, waterproof bag, backup battery, waterproof shoes

Baggage check in

Since the start and finish are located at separate sites, the baggage of competitors is checked in at the start and carried in vehicles to the finish and returned to the competitors.

    30 Km: September 23, until 19:30 . 60 Km: September 24, until 7:30 . 120 Km: September 24, until 17:30 .

Prohibited actions

Organizers may terminate races of competitors on the spot if they violate the following rules and fail to follow the cautions given by the organizers.

  1. Short-cutting along the course or running outside of the course
  2. Failure to have the required equipment
  3. Throwing garbage away (including support staff of competitors)
  4. Competitors receiving support outside of designated locations
  5. Running with someone who is not a competitor or registered guide runner
  6. Misconduct (e.g. use of vehicles, substitute runner, or other actions that violate laws)
  7. Failure to carry the recording IC chip
  8. Failure to follow the instructions of official race staff, doctors, nurses, or rescuers
  9. Continuing the race after the cutoff time
  10. Failure to wear numbers during the race


▓ Responsibilities of the event organizers

  • Damage to objects on the course that is not caused by the intended actions of participants (e.g. accidents involving animals, plants, and objects and the collapse of trails)
  • Marking the course and installing guide signs
  • Safety management of the staff ※The organizers purchased liability insurance and insurance for injuries and illnesses of competitors. However, competitors are also encouraged to purchase their own insurance.

▓ Responsibility of competitors

  • Competitors are responsible for all aspects other than the above concerning participation in this race.

Decision on canceling the event and notification

When organizers decide that starting or continuing the event is difficult based on the following reasons, the organizers will cancel the event before it starts or during the event. The event will not be postponed to the next week, for example. Changes to courses, locations of check gates, and cutoff times may be possible.

  • When a weather warning is in effect
  • When organizers determine that safety cannot be ensured for competitors due to conditions, such as landslides and falling rocks, along the course
  • In case of disasters
  • When a massive earthquake occurs near the course, or when a weather warning, such as heavy rain or strong winds, or a landslide hazard warning is issued in nearby areas, the organizers examine the effects and make decisions on canceling the event or changing or shortening the course.
  • Organizers may make decisions on designating walking zones, changing courses, or canceling the event if they determine that conditions on the trails cannot withstand use by many participants in the event even when there is no safety problem.
  • Organizers will individually examine the situations and make decisions on reducing the size of the event, canceling the event, or method of notification in case of an earthquake, wind or water hazard, snow, criminal incident, accident, or plague.
  • Decisions on canceling the event will be released on the event website and the official Facebook page of the event on the day of the event or by one day prior to the event. Do not call the event office with inquiries. If the race is terminated before completion, an official announcement will be released at the individual aid stations.
  • The participation fee will not be returned as a basic rule when the event is canceled.
